A CLIP of Pope Francis holding Scotch\u00a0whisky<\/a>\u00a0and saying it is \u201cthe real holy water\u201d was censored ahead of a new documentary about Scottish seminarians in Rome.<\/p>\n

The clip showed the Pope accept a bottle of Oban malt from some Scottish student priests at an event at the Apostolic Palace last year.<\/p>\n

\n

Vatican media said the quip should be cut from the film before it could be broadcast this weekend.<\/p>\n

Director Tony Kearney who made the one-hour documentary Priest School for the\u00a0BBC<\/a>\u00a0with his company Solus Productions said they\u2019d filmed the Pope\u2019s meeting with the students during the 18-month project.<\/p>\n

Kearney said the Pope was \u201creally down to Earth with them all\u201d and didn\u2019t opt for the usual procedure when handed the bottle of whisky as a gift.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWhen they handed him the bottle, instead of just handing it to his assistant as he normally would with a gift, he held it up and said \u2018questa e la vera acqua santa\u2019 \u2013 which means this is the real holy water.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe guffawed with laughter and it was a real ice-breaker with the students and put everyone at ease.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we\u2019d agreed that the Vatican\u2019s media office would be allowed to approve all of our footage before we broadcast it.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we sent them the files and when they sent it back that bit of him saying that was cut out.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were really annoyed at first, but they insisted they didn\u2019t want the Pope to be seen to be endorsing whisky.\u201d<\/p>\n
