The Greatest Speyside Whisky

One of the events planned for the upcoming Speyside Festival 2005, beginning April 29th and running through May 2nd, is a tasting to determine the “greatest Speyside whisky”.

Here are the 6 finalists as determined by a small panel of whisky industry “experts”:

25-year-old Glenfarclas
21-year-old Glenlivet
10-year-old Aberlour
12-year-old Macallan
cask-strength Macallan
15-year-old Glenfiddich Solera Reserve.

I thought a reprisal of this “taste-off” might be a fun, future tasting idea.

Interesting…I’ve had the pleasure to try all but the Glenfarclas. (Sadly, any Glenfarclas has been absent from my experience). I wonder how they arrived at the finalists. Maybe there was some consideration of the degree of availability of the whiskies in order to be a finalist. They’re all fine whiskies, but would I say that any of those are the finest that Speyside has to offer? Probably not. But, I think you’re right that it would make for a fun tasting.

Also interestingly, (At least to me) I had a house load of guests last week, and unfortunately for my collection we broke out single malts. My Glenfiddich 15 year solera got drained. Quickly. From the single dram that I got, I remember thinking that it was vastly under-rated. I see now that it is not.

Yeah – you know my regard for Glenfiddich is much higher now than it was 4 or 5 years ago. That 15 year Solera must be quite good.
